Decades in Utah

What We Install

Sidewalk & Walkway Services

Every project includes full site preparation, proper base compaction, formwork, reinforcement, concrete placement, and a durable broom finish.

Front Entry Walkways

Your front walkway connects the street or driveway to your front door. A clean, level, properly graded front walkway makes a strong first impression and keeps everyone safe.

80 to 200 sq ft typical, 3 to 5 feet wide.

Side-Yard Pathways

Side-yard pathways connect the front of your home to the backyard, providing a clean walking surface for accessing backyard gates, trash storage, and outdoor equipment.

3 feet wide, 40 to 80 feet long. Proper drainage slope is critical.

Garden & Backyard Walkways

Garden walkways connect your patio to outbuildings, define paths through landscaped areas, and provide solid footing. Stamped concrete is popular for a decorative look.

Custom widths and finishes available.

Connecting Pathways

Connecting pathways link separate structures on your property. House to detached garage, patio to pool area, driveway to side entry. Safe, level access year-round.

Keeps foot traffic off your lawn.

Sidewalk Replacement

If your existing sidewalk is cracked, heaving, or settling, replacement is often more cost-effective than repeated patching. We match width, finish, and elevation seamlessly.

Old concrete removal, re-grading, and new pour included.

What Factors Affect Sidewalk Cost?

Width: Standard 3-4 feet. ADA-compliant paths require a minimum of 3 feet. Wider paths (5+ feet) cost more.
Length: Longer runs cost more total but often less per square foot due to spread setup costs.
Site access: If a concrete truck cannot reach the pour site directly, wheelbarrowing or pumping adds cost.
Grade changes: Uphill/downhill walkways require stepped or ramped sections with additional formwork.
Existing concrete removal: Tear-out and hauling adds $2 to $4 per square foot.
Finish upgrade: Stamped or decorative finish adds $4 to $8 per square foot over standard broom.

Existing concrete removal adds $2 to $4 per square foot for demolition and hauling. Site access, grade changes, and soil conditions also affect final cost.

Our Process

How We Install Your Sidewalk

Rhode Concrete follows a structured process for every project. Bryce and his son handle every step personally.

01
Step 01

Free On-Site Estimate

Bryce visits your property, measures the walkway area, evaluates soil and drainage conditions, discusses your preferences, and provides a detailed written quote. No charge. No obligation.

02
Step 02

Existing Concrete Removal

If replacing old sidewalk, we break out the existing concrete, remove debris, and check for soft spots, root intrusion, or drainage issues that may have caused the original failure.

03
Step 03

Base Preparation

We excavate to proper depth, add and compact gravel base material, and establish the correct drainage slope. Critical in Utah County due to expansive clay soils.

04
Step 04

Formwork & Reinforcement

Forms are set along both edges to define width, shape, and grade. Wire mesh or rebar is placed to add tensile strength and reduce cracking from soil movement and freeze-thaw cycling.

05
Step 05

Concrete Placement & Finishing

Fresh concrete is placed, consolidated, screeded flat, and finished with a broom texture. Control joints cut every 4 to 5 feet manage any future cracking within the joints.

06
Step 06

Curing & Follow-Up

We provide specific curing instructions based on weather conditions. Keeping the surface moist for the first several days is essential for maximum strength and durability.

Accessibility

ADA Compliance &
Residential Walkways

While ADA standards technically apply to public and commercial properties, many Utah County homeowners choose to build their residential walkways to ADA guidelines for practical safety reasons. This is especially common for aging-in-place projects or homes with elderly family members.

Minimum 3-foot clear width (4 feet recommended for comfortable two-person passing)
Maximum 1:20 running slope (5% grade) for walkways without handrails
Maximum 1:12 slope (8.3% grade) for ramp sections with handrails
Smooth transitions at driveway crossings, patio connections, and door thresholds
Broom finish surface for consistent slip resistance meeting ADA texture requirements
Adequate lighting path alignment with existing or planned landscape lighting

Mention accessibility during your estimate and Bryce will design your walkway to meet or exceed these guidelines.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about concrete sidewalk and walkway projects in Utah County.

Ready-mix concrete in Utah County currently runs approximately $130 to $170 per cubic yard for standard residential mixes, delivered. However, the total cost of a sidewalk project includes base preparation, formwork, reinforcement, labor, finishing, and cleanup. Pricing per square foot ($6 to $14 for broom finish) gives a more accurate picture of your total investment.
The 10/20/30/40 rule is a timing guideline that concrete finishers use during the pour. It refers to the approximate percentages of the total finishing window: 10% on initial screeding, 20% on bull floating, 30% on waiting for bleed water to evaporate, and 40% on final finishing (edging, jointing, and broom texturing). This helps avoid finishing too early or too late.
A properly installed concrete sidewalk lasts 25 to 30 years or more in Utah County. Factors that affect lifespan include base preparation quality, concrete thickness, reinforcement, drainage management, and exposure to freeze-thaw cycles. Sidewalks that fail prematurely almost always trace back to inadequate base compaction or poor drainage.
Consider full replacement if your sidewalk has multiple sections with cracks wider than 1/4 inch, sections that have heaved or settled more than 1/2 inch, surface spalling across large areas, or the sidewalk is more than 20 years old with visible damage. If damage is limited to one or two sections, partial replacement may be more cost-effective.
