Broom Finish Concrete
in Utah County

Slip-resistant, cost-effective, and built to last decades. The most popular concrete finish for driveways, patios, and walkways.

The Standard

What Is Broom Finish
Concrete?

Broom finish concrete is a textured surface created by dragging a broom across freshly poured concrete before it cures. The bristles leave fine, parallel lines in the surface that provide traction underfoot and under tires, even when the concrete is wet.

This is the standard finish on most residential driveways, sidewalks, garage floors, and patios across Utah County. It handles Utah's freeze-thaw cycles, resists slipping in rain and snow, and costs less than stamped, exposed aggregate, or polished alternatives.

Every concrete contractor knows how to run a broom across a slab. The difference is in the timing, technique, and consistency. Rhode Concrete's father-and-son crew has finished hundreds of projects, and broom finish work makes up the majority of that volume.

Texture Options

Broom Finish Types & Textures

Not all broom finishes look the same. The texture varies based on bristle stiffness, pressure, timing, and the number of passes.

Light Broom texture

Light Broom

Fine Texture

Subtle, barely visible lines using a soft-bristle broom with minimal pressure. Closest to a smooth trowel while still providing slip resistance.

Best For

  • Covered patios
  • Decorative walkways
  • Indoor-outdoor transitions
  • Pool surrounds
Most Popular
Medium Broom texture

Medium Broom

Standard Texture

The standard residential texture. Clearly visible, evenly spaced lines created with moderate pressure. The go-to for most residential projects.

Best For

  • Driveways
  • Sidewalks & walkways
  • Patios
  • Garage aprons
Heavy Broom texture

Heavy Broom

Deep Texture

Deep, prominent texture lines using a stiff-bristle broom with firm pressure. Maximum grip for areas where slip resistance is the top priority.

Best For

  • Steep driveway grades
  • Slopes & ramps
  • Service entrances
  • Heavy snow/ice areas

How It Compares

Broom Finish vs Other
Concrete Finishes

Utah County homeowners often ask us to compare broom finish against other popular options. Here's how it stacks up.

Broom Finish

vs Stamped Concrete

Stamped Concrete Offers

Decorative patterns mimicking stone, brick, or tile

Downside

Significantly more expensive per square foot

Our Take

Broom finish delivers a clean, functional surface at standard pricing ($6-$10/sq ft). Combine both by adding a stamped border to a broom finish driveway.

Broom Finish

vs Smooth Trowel

Smooth Trowel Offers

Sleek, modern appearance

Downside

Dangerously slippery when wet

Our Take

In Utah County where snow, ice, and rain are half the year, broom finish is the safer choice for any outdoor surface.

Broom Finish

vs Exposed Aggregate

Exposed Aggregate Offers

Decorative, textured look from revealed stone

Downside

Higher cost, requires resealing every few years

Our Take

Broom finish delivers comparable slip resistance at lower cost with less maintenance.

Upgrade Option

Colored Broom
Finish Concrete

Broom finish doesn't have to be plain gray. Add integral color to the mix before pouring for a consistent tint throughout the entire slab. Popular choices include tan, buff, terra cotta, and charcoal.

  • Warmer, more custom look than standard gray
  • Color goes all the way through — not just surface
  • Same slip-resistant texture and durability
  • Moderate cost increase over plain gray

Popular for patios and front walkways where curb appeal matters. Ask Bryce about color options during your estimate.

Broom Finish Concrete Cost

Broom finish is the most cost-effective concrete finish available. It requires no special tools, materials, or additives beyond the broom itself — the finish is included in standard concrete pricing.

$6 – $10per square foot

Final price depends on slab size, thickness, site preparation, and accessibility. Colored broom finish adds a moderate upcharge. Get an exact quote with a free in-person estimate.

FAQ

Common Broom Finish
Questions

The texture can trap dirt in the grooves, making it slightly harder to sweep clean than a smooth finish. Heavy broom textures may feel rough underfoot for barefoot areas like pool decks (choose light broom instead). Beyond that, broom finish has very few downsides for residential use.
Timing is critical. The broom pass happens after the concrete has been floated and the surface water (bleed water) has evaporated, but before the slab sets too hard. In Utah's dry climate, this window can be short, especially on hot summer days. Getting the timing right is what separates a clean, even broom finish from a torn, patchy one.
Yes. "Broom finish" and "brushed finish" refer to the same technique. Both terms describe dragging bristles across fresh concrete to create a textured, slip-resistant surface.
Sealing is recommended but not required. A quality concrete sealer protects the surface from moisture absorption, salt damage, and staining — all of which matter in Utah County's climate. Sealing also deepens the color if you've chosen integral coloring. We recommend sealing within the first year and reapplying every 2 to 3 years.
A properly poured and finished concrete slab lasts 25 to 30 years or more with basic maintenance. The broom texture itself is permanent since it's formed in the concrete during curing, not applied on top.
No. Broom finish is the most cost-effective concrete finish available. It's included in standard concrete pricing because it requires no special tools, materials, or additives beyond the broom itself. A standard driveway in Utah County runs $6 to $10 per square foot.
